When you walk into Lesley A. Powell’s art show, Interpretations the paintings will speak to you about bodies moving on a canvas, nature inspiring you to see landscapes differently and the body within.

After her career as a dancer/choreographer, the canvas is now the stage for movement, line, color, texture and expression.  In Lesley A. Powell’s Art deals with the ability to expressively describe movement, its emotions and space, whether it was on the stage or now the two dimensional space of the canvas..  Lesley is intrigued by the movements of the body, stories of juxtapositions of images of people and the love of nature.

Interpretations is blurring the image(s) on the canvas.

Dances on a Surface

Choreography helped me explore the layering of moving bodies. This is what I bring to my painting. The paint is now the rhythm on the page like the dancer(s) in space.

Dances of Nature

My grandfather’s love of nature transferred to me. My grandfather and his father were both painters. landscapes are now the stage set and lighting design.  Nature is the catalyst for creating a new space on the canvas.

Dances of the Body Within

In teaching anatomy to Pilates teachers and working on online videos, I started creating work about the body.  I wanted to give a feeling of the inside of the body and its reflection to movement.
